WHAT IS LIRAGLUTIDE
Less hunger.
More room for good habits.
Liraglutide mimics a natural signal called GLP-1. It can help manage appetite and blood sugar. It is a prescription medicine given daily.
ONE SIGNAL, SEVERAL EFFECTS
An explanatory view of the mechanism, not an atomic model.
Why does it not disappear immediately?
Natural GLP-1 is broken down quickly. A modification helps liraglutide bind to albumin, a blood protein, and remain active for longer. It is not insulin. ↗
One substance. Different uses.
Saxenda · weight
In the EU, for adults with BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 plus a weight-related condition, alongside diet and physical activity. BMI stands for body mass index. ↗
Victoza · diabetes
For type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and over. The same molecule does not mean the same indication or dose. Switching products requires clinical assessment. ↗
A daily treatment
Liraglutide is injected under the skin once a day. The injectable semaglutide used in the comparison below is given weekly. That difference matters in everyday routines. ↗
Children and adolescents have separate eligibility criteria. In the EU, Saxenda covers certain cases of obesity from age 6; see the FAQ for details. Authorisation does not establish Romanian stock availability or reimbursement. ↗
WHAT THE CHANGE CAN FEEL LIKE
A meal can end
before the plate is empty.
Liraglutide can make eating less feel easier. You do not need to feel sick for treatment to help.
Less bargaining with hunger.
You may feel less need to snack and become satisfied sooner. Fullness is a bodily signal; treatment may make that signal easier to follow. The effect varies from person to person. ↗
The stomach plays a part too.
Stomach emptying is delayed, so fullness may last longer. But nausea, vomiting or being unable to eat enough are not treatment goals. ↗
Look at the trend, not one day.
Weight trials follow months of treatment. One hungrier day cannot determine whether treatment is working. Follow-up considers weight, tolerability and overall wellbeing. ↗
WEIGHT · TRIAL RESULTS
How much weight was lost?
Numbers, with context.
Two different questions: how it performed against placebo and in a direct comparison with semaglutide. These are group averages.
SCALE · 56 WEEKS
Against placebo
3,731 adults without diabetes, with obesity or overweight plus a related condition. Both groups received diet and activity support.
Mean weight loss · kilograms
Mean starting weight: 106.2 kg. At least 5% weight loss was achieved by 63.2% with liraglutide and 27.1% with placebo. Missing data used last-observation-carried-forward imputation. ↗
STEP 8 · 68 WEEKS
Against semaglutide
338 adults without diabetes. Participants in the two active groups knew which treatment they received; placebo groups were also included.
Mean weight loss · percentage
Mean difference: 9.4 percentage points in favour of semaglutide. The primary analysis accounted for treatment discontinuation. Doses identify the study groups. ↗
An average cannot tell how many kilograms you will lose. Tolerability, medical history and the ability to continue treatment also matter.
PANCREAS & BLOOD SUGAR
It can also help
with blood sugar.
In type 2 diabetes, weight loss is only part of the picture. Blood sugar control matters too.
More insulin when it is needed.
Liraglutide helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is raised. Victoza is authorised for type 2 diabetes; treatment choice considers other medicines and test results. ↗
What does the clinician track?
HbA1c reflects blood sugar over roughly the past three months. An improved value and weight loss are different outcomes. Combining liraglutide with insulin or sulfonylureas can increase hypoglycaemia risk. ↗
HEART · LEADER
A benefit
the scale cannot show.
9,340 people with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk, followed for a median 3.8 years. Liraglutide, up to 1.8 mg daily, was added to usual care.
MAJOR CARDIOVASCULAR EVENT
Nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke or cardiovascular death: 608 of 4,668 versus 694 of 4,672. ↗
What does the difference mean?
The observed proportions differ by 1.9 percentage points. The time-to-event analysis found a hazard ratio of 0.87. This is not a 13-percentage-point reduction and does not establish the same benefit for everyone taking Saxenda for weight loss. ↗
SLEEP · SCALE SLEEP APNEA
Breathing during sleep.
Another part of the picture.
359 adults with obesity and moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnoea, without diabetes, who were not using CPAP. The trial lasted 32 weeks.
Fewer episodes per hour.
AHI fell by 12.2 events/hour with liraglutide 3 mg, versus 6.1 with placebo. AHI counts breathing pauses and reductions per hour of sleep. ↗
A useful finding, with a clear limit.
These are not percentages and do not mean apnoea was cured. Saxenda has no separate EU sleep apnoea indication. This finding does not justify stopping CPAP without sleep reassessment and a discussion with your clinician. ↗
AFTER THE FIRST RESULTS
Reaching a result.
Being able to maintain it.
Progress matters, and so does life during treatment: energy, meals and tolerability.
After diet-induced weight loss
In SCALE Maintenance, 422 adults had already lost at least 5% through diet. After another 56 weeks, 81.4% with liraglutide and 48.9% with placebo had maintained that initial loss. This studied maintenance after diet, not withdrawal of the medicine. ↗
When continuing makes sense
In the EU, adults should discontinue Saxenda if they have not lost at least 5% of initial weight after 12 weeks at 3 mg/day. The clinician also reviews side effects, food intake and whether continuing is worthwhile. ↗
If appetite falls so much that meals become difficult or low energy keeps you from activities, tell your clinician. A lower number on the scale does not, on its own, describe how well you are doing. ↗
PERSONAL ACCOUNTS
The same molecule.
Very different days.
Three public Reddit accounts, read and paraphrased. These are selected experiences, not verified medical cases or evidence of how often an effect occurs.
Less hunger, an encouraging start.
Three weeks after starting, a 25-year-old woman reported losing about 4 kg and having no binge-eating episodes in that period. Her job involved plenty of walking. On days with little appetite, she still tried to eat enough. Her experience was mostly positive, although the beginning had also brought nausea and vomiting.
Original account ↗Losing weight, but struggling with meals.
After a few months, this person reported losing more than 9 kg. Nausea had eased, but appetite remained so low that eating was no longer enjoyable. For a time, low energy had led them to stop intense workouts. They were discussing long-term suitability with a clinician and nutritionist: the number on the scale was only part of the decision.
Original account ↗A difficult start despite high hopes.
A 27-year-old woman hoped for help after exercise and attention to food had not brought the result she wanted. After four days she described nausea, bloating, unpleasant burps and diarrhoea. She said her endocrinologist had asked her to pause treatment. Its cost added to her disappointment. The post captures that difficult moment; her later outcome is unknown.
Original account ↗SIDE EFFECTS
What can be uncomfortable.
What needs attention.
Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting are common. More discomfort does not mean more benefit.
| Reaction | Liraglutide · 3 mg | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea | 39.3% | 13.8% |
| Diarrhoea | 20.9% | 9.9% |
| Constipation | 19.4% | 8.5% |
| Vomiting | 15.7% | 3.9% |
Percentages of participants reporting the reaction, not episode counts. These are pooled data, not only the SCALE trial shown above. ↗
What to discuss beforehand
Discuss pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, severely delayed stomach emptying and diabetes medicines. Vomiting and diarrhoea can cause dehydration and kidney injury. Inform your medical team before an anaesthetic procedure. ↗
The US label contraindicates use with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. Tumours observed in rodents do not establish the same effect in humans. ↗
Pregnancy and other medicines
EU information advises against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Check with your clinician before combining products; the US label does not recommend use with another liraglutide product or another GLP-1 agonist. EMA ↗ · DailyMed ↗
EU information does not anticipate reduced contraceptive effectiveness from the interaction studied. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea may still require following the instructions in the pill leaflet. ↗
When to seek help
Severe persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down or very little urine need prompt assessment. Difficulty breathing or swelling of the tongue or throat is an emergency: call 112 in Romania/the EU or your local emergency number. ↗
06 / FAQ
Your questions.
Clear answers.
The dossier, explained simply. Open a question for the answer and its source.
What is liraglutide and what does it help with?
Liraglutide is a GLP-1 agonist: it can reduce appetite and help control blood sugar. Saxenda is used for weight management and Victoza for type 2 diabetes. Indications and doses differ.
Source & context ↗Is liraglutide given daily or weekly?
Liraglutide is given daily by subcutaneous injection. Its schedule differs from weekly injectable semaglutide. Your clinician determines your treatment plan.
Source & context ↗How much weight can be lost with liraglutide?
In SCALE, average loss at 56 weeks was 8.4 kg with liraglutide 3 mg/day and 2.8 kg with placebo, alongside lifestyle support. Participants did not have diabetes. This is not an individual prediction.
Source & context ↗Liraglutide or semaglutide: which produced greater weight loss in the trial?
In STEP 8 at 68 weeks: −6.4% with liraglutide 3 mg daily and −15.8% with semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly. Participants were adults without diabetes. Individual choice also depends on tolerability and medical history.
Source & context ↗Can it be used without diabetes?
Yes. Saxenda has a weight-management indication that includes adults without diabetes: BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 plus a weight-related condition. Eligibility needs clinical assessment.
Source & context ↗When is the response to Saxenda reviewed?
For adults, EU information requires discontinuation if at least 5% of initial weight has not been lost after 12 weeks at 3 mg/day. These 12 weeks are not simply counted from the first injection.
Source & context ↗What happens after stopping liraglutide?
Appetite control may not persist after stopping. Discuss a maintenance plan with your clinician. SCALE Maintenance, shown here, studied maintenance after diet, not liraglutide withdrawal; it cannot predict how much weight you will regain.
Source & context ↗Does liraglutide protect the heart?
LEADER found fewer major cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk. It does not establish the same benefit for everyone using Saxenda for weight loss.
Source & context ↗What are the common side effects?
Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting are common. Severe persistent abdominal pain or inability to keep fluids down need prompt assessment. The dedicated section shows trial percentages and important risks.
Source & context ↗Explore the Side effects section ↗Is liraglutide also authorised for children?
In the EU, Saxenda includes adolescents aged 12 and over with obesity and weight above 60 kg, and children aged 6–11 with BMI at or above the 95th percentile and weight of at least 45 kg. Victoza has a separate type 2 diabetes indication from age 10. These are paediatric criteria, not self-treatment advice.
Source & context ↗Can it be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No, according to European product information. If you plan a pregnancy or become pregnant, discuss discontinuation with your clinician.
Source & context ↗Can Saxenda be combined with Ozempic or Wegovy?
The US label does not recommend Saxenda with another GLP-1 agonist, such as the semaglutide in Ozempic or Wegovy, or with another liraglutide product. A treatment switch needs clinical planning.
